Weekly Top 10 Comic Book Covers – Week 6/3/2015

Here are my personal choices for this weeks top 10 comic book covers.  These covers got my attention and whether being good or not, are deserving of your attention as well.

This week saw an influx of variants by all publishers that I would have loved to placed on the list, alas though there is only room for 10 so here we go!  Yasmine Putri’s Amazing Spider-Man variant had a unique pastel shading to it catching my eye.  Next who doesn’t like Bizarro and this weeks variant by Kyle Baker just makes the character that much lovable, almost like that big green dumb guy over in the Marvel corner.  Fabiano Neves created a beautiful work of art for Blood Queen, love the lines, the color, everything.

Next we have a comic even I have been looking forward too and yes that is the Giant-Size Little Marvel AvX #1 where we get to see a bunch of cute ass X-Men, Avengers, and everyone else get in there and battle it out for whatever reason that may be.  I enjoyed Humberto Ramos’s take on the group and I thought out of all the action figure variants that have come and gone, John Tyler Christopher did an awesome job on the Cap and Cyclops.  Where can I buy those figures for my son John?

Nailbiter is another creepy and horrific comic at times dealing with psychopaths and serial killers.  This weeks cover by Mike Henderson was a step away from the norm and I enjoyed that immensely.  Love the Golden Age style cover and how even the white parts even have that dirty rub look that you would find on a cover from this time period.  The Sixth Gun: Valley of Death just came across as a no holds bar cover where a badass blood thirsty character is show chomping away blood in all.  Uncanny Season 2 #3 had a complex and beautiful collage layout immersing oneself with a limited color scheme that worked well combining the wolf’s head with the layout of the town.  The shading and somewhat abstract detail of the town made it all work out, great job Jock!  Woods #13 was simple but affective, blood red with a fog back drop creating that eerie feeling, very powerful.  Finally Years of Future Past did a wonderful job of displaying all the characters in play for that book.

Any ways, that’s this weeks top 10.  If you plan on searching for any of the rare ones good luck and happy hunting!

Weekly Top 10 Comic Book Covers – Week 5/27/2015

Here are my personal choices for this weeks top 10 comic book covers.  These covers got my attention and whether being good or not, are deserving of your attention as well.

This has been an off week for me as it was my birthday.  Nothing like being reminded that another year has past.  It has been fun watching my little kids grow up but as each year passes I feel the need to somehow in someway put the breaks on.  Alas that doesn’t seem to working out for me.  Well cheers for another great year, at least I still have my health, family, and friends!  Now for some comic book talk!

Brian Churilla made the top 10 list this week with his cover for Big Trouble in Little China.  I had a chance to meet him at ECCC this year, pretty cool guy.  Signed my Secret History of D.B. Cooper series that he worked on for Oni Press a while back.  Next Emanuela Lupacchino made the list again simply because her artwork is just so damn clean.  Her covers are stunning pieces of artwork and even though I haven’t read many of the series she’s worked on I still do enjoy gazing at her artwork.  I thought Jelena’s Divinity cover was done very well.  A clean cover emitting that mysterious feeling and since I’m currently reading the series I to0 am looking forward for the 4th and final installment of the 4-part miniseries.

A new series out called Indestructible Stingray made the list twice, Jeff’s cover of the mysterious woman was awe inspiring.  Love the penetrating eyes of the woman figure gracing the cover. On the other hand Nei’s rendition had more sex appeal to it with all proportions done just right.  Adi Granov did a variant cover for Inferno, I believe it’s a very sexy take of Magik (Illyana Rasputin).  I’m not sure if I like the out of the box look or if it’s just so different that it caught my eye, you be the judge. JH Williams III did a fabulous job on his abstract looking cover for The Sandman; colors are damn good too.  This weeks variant cover for Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles caught my eye because of how each turtle was drawn…mean and green pumped up on an extra few doses of super steroids.  These turtles could rip you in half with their bare hands.  Christ man stay away from me!  Finally Kotteri did a great job on Ratchet and Drift for Transformers More Than Meets The Eye.

Any ways, that’s this weeks top 10.  If you plan on searching for any of the rare ones good luck and happy hunting!

Weekly Top 10 Comic Book Covers – Week 5/20/2015

Here are my personal choices for this weeks top 10 comic book covers.  These covers got my attention and whether being good or not, are deserving of your attention as well.

There definitely wasn’t a shortage of amazing artwork this week and I had an immensely difficult time narrowing down my search to just 10 covers.  I also felt that I shouldn’t let any one publisher runaway with the list.  However after much internal debate with me, myself, and I, I think that I’ve accomplished this weeks task.  First off A-Force is a new series my Marvel and with that came a barrage of varying artist covers.  Most were pretty darn good and that usually doesn’t happen from a big publisher.  Stephanie Hans variant cover was simply amazing prompting me to create a folder for her artwork up on Pinterest: Stephany Hans.  Jim Cheung was up next with his regular cover and I found it fascinating to see so many characters.  I mean yes we have seen many variations of covers with a bunch of characters on it but he melded together in great detail each one clearly in that they are easily identifiable, so yeah, damn good job!

Now Dustin is a pretty hot artist right now but I just found his Archie vs. Predator cover humorous.  Not to mention it’s about Archie and his buddies against one of the most cunning and vicious hunters in the known universe.  Next Deadpool has a new series called Deadpool’s Secret Secret Wars and yeah I’m gonna read it and yeah he is dead but hey, I love Deadpool.  Skottie Young hasn’t made the list in a while but I couldn’t pass this one up, Hulk and Black Widows faces are just too damn funny.  LaRosa’s Ninjax cover is badass and the blobs of blood only add to the oozing affect of badass-ness extruding from the front cover, go buy it!

Michael Del Mundo’s Planet Hulk cover had great imaginative artistry going, love the fist intertwined with smaller fists.  Jae Lee had a bunch of covers out this week, along with Francesco Francavilla but his Re-Animator #1 was by far the best.  Jay Anacleto created a work of art for Red Sonja Vultures Circle #4.  It almost looks like something you would find in an art museum.  Jenny Frison did an amazing job on her rendition of Vampirella, the colorist should get some credit as well.  It really brought that cover to life.  Finally Steve Epting’s Winter World Frozen Fleet new series cover had life to it.  I may need to pick up this second arc.

Any ways, that’s this weeks top 10.  If you plan on searching for any of the rare ones good luck and happy hunting!

Weekly Top 10 Comic Book Covers – Week 5/13/2015

Here are my personal choices for this weeks top 10 comic book covers.  These covers got my attention and whether being good or not, are deserving of your attention as well.

Another week has gone by and my birthday is right around the corner!  Time is literally speeding along like a bullet train with no stops, life flashing before my eyes.  Fabulous, glad that’s out of the way.  Any ways, this weeks set of covers was again bloated by the Convergence event over at DC while Marvel’s Secret Wars event is picking up speed with issue #2 and all associated tie-ins.

Our first cover is the Auteur Sister Bambi from Oni Press, the publisher may be small but it is awesome!  James did a fantastic job with the detail inside the skull.  Love Sean’s depiction of our two main characters pose in a Lethal Weapon movie style poster.   Somehow a Convergence cover made it into the top 10.  I felt it deserved it as the characters look anatomically correct and the color was done well too, kudos to Tony Daniel.  Darick Robertson did a sick cover for Judge Dredd.  Too bad I’m not reading it as I wonder if the artwork within is that badass.  Another amazing cover was for the first issue of Lantern City, retailer incentive by Dave Dorman. With immense detail and imagination I feel like this stood out as one of the best this week.  Tula Lotay did a great job on her abstract virgin variant this week for Project Superpowers Blackcross.  Jay Anacleto must have spent a long time on this cover and I wish I found out the colorist as they must have put some time into it as well, so eye catching, like the Lantern City cover, great detail and color.

Saga has been around for a couple years now and with issue 28 I can safely say that Fiona Staples artwork is very consistent with each issue and she is an amazing artist, one of the best in my mind.  With Brian K. Vaughan still at the helm I’ll be reading this one until the end.  I’m not much of a Spider-Man fan and yeah maybe I’m in the minority group but just never caught on for me.  I think the only time it did was when he was in the New Avengers written by Brian Michael Bendis.  Speaking of I’ve owned the first volume of the New Avengers Omnibus and yeah, still waiting for Omnibus volume 2 Marvel, any day would be great for me!  Veering off the path a bit here, with Spider-Man comes this weeks 2099 issue and Will Sliney did wonders with that cover.  The intricate detail of each line drawn adds to the overall affect in combination with the right amount of color and shadowing, stand out cover no doubt.  Finally we come to a uniquely drawn Storm, not sure what’s happening in the series but the cover states punk!

Any ways, that’s this weeks top 10.  If you plan on searching for any of the rare ones good luck and happy hunting!

Weekly Top 10 Comic Book Covers – Week 5/6/2015

Here are my personal choices for this weeks top 10 comic book covers.  These covers got my attention and whether being good or not, are deserving of your attention as well.

A new series out this past week is named Arcadia and the retailer incentive virgin variant by Scott Pfeiffer stood out amongst the rest of the group simply because of the shear detail that went into creating the landscape and our bedridden patient.  Just so many beautiful lines.  Next we have a Peter Bergting cover for issue #1 of Baltimore Cult Of The Red King.  Another cover that made my list is part of the Convergence event and yes, it’s the Harley Quinn cover.  I chose it because of the unique pastel colors and the somewhat HDR feel it offers.

A new series out this week is Dead Drop and I plan on reading it as well.  Great character detail, especially in Archer.  Another Emanuela Lupacchino cover this week from the John Carter series, so beautifully drawn that I couldn’t pass up.   Finally Amy Reeder’s awesome series Rocket Girl has landed itself back on the grid.  I’m not really sure why after issue 5 it took so dang long for issue 6 to publish.  I know that all my preorders of this series past 5 were canceled by Midtown Comics and months later I had to preorder the same covers again so if anyone know please enlighten me on the status of the group.

I really want to follow Secret Wars but with all the tie-ins and offshoots I’m hesitant to even try.  Doesn’t stop me from qualifying the new issue drawn by none other than Alex Ross.  Jim Cheung also contributes to the event depicting two factions.  Been a while since our next artist made the list but I did enjoy Skottie Young’s cover for the Secret Wars event, very cute.  Finally we have a beautifully drawn celebration of Wonder Woman from the 70’s that includes the woman that played her in the original TV series, Lynda Carter.  Check out the Wiki Site describing the TV Series, made it for 3 seasons.

Any ways, that’s this weeks top 10.  If you plan on searching for any of the rare ones good luck and happy hunting!

Top 10 Comic Book Covers – Week 4/29/2015

Top 10 Comic Book Covers – Week 4/29/2015

Here are my choices for top comic book covers.  As always there are way to many to pick from but these definitely got my attention!

So all hell has broken loose this week with the release of the final book for Batman’s End Game story line in issue #40 where apparently either or both Batman and Joker will die.  This has led to a run on the book and finding either the regular or variant cover will be difficult.  Yes difficult, unless you are willing to pay higher cost in the secondary market.  Now if you want the retailer incentive cover by Andy Kubert that is both awesome and twisted, well then good luck.

Next cover was Joe Eisma’s Morning Glories cover.  I like it because of the realism of the sunset.  If you stare at it long enough you can see the sky almost become a little wavy like a real sunset.  Next, I really like the color scheme of this weeks Multiversity by Francis Manapul.  A wonderful collage of vibrant colors and characters pleasing to the eye.  I’ve personally stayed away from the recent events of DC but it doesn’t mean the art can’t be fantastic.  This weeks Spread, which is always a twisted display of freakishness has also decided to jump on the action figure variant bandwagon; definitely an oddball villain.  Superman was chosen simply because of the way the characters were drawn and the viewing angle.  If you look closely at Superman on the cover it seems like the right portion of this body is just plain out of whack.  A very large bulge on the bottom right of his torso.  The followup issue to the wildly popular and sold out Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #44 and the possible death of Donatello story comes the retailer incentive #45 that shows what looks to  be a robotic Donatello and drawn to perfection.

Jonathan Lau’s Twilight Zone cover had a unique transition of light and dark.  I’m thinking the colorist has more work cut to do on this cover than Lau but still teamwork does pay off.  War Stories was just plain funny, take a look at the caption in combination with the art and I’m sure you’ll agree.  Finally we have a happy-go-lucky cover with this weeks Wayward.  Just drawn well, a happy feeling type of cover.

Any ways, that’s this weeks top 10 and if you are searching for any of the rare ones good luck and happy hunting!

Top 10 Comic Book Covers – Week 4/22/2015

Top 10 Comic Book Covers – Week 4/22/2015

Here are my choices for top comic book covers.  As always there are way to many to pick from but these definitely got my attention!

Oh this was a dismal week for covers.  I mean I’ve heard the Convergence DC Comics event isn’t all that great and the covers haven’t been spectacular as well.  That being said Batman Arkham Knight cover by Dan Panosian was just downright creepy.  Next we have another so called event by Marvel involving the Black Vortex.  Now I’ve been trying to follow it with my backlog of reading material I’ve only sparsely touched this story line via the Guardians of the Galaxy Team-Up comics that have been releasing as of late, fun to read.  Anyways Andrea Sorrention’s variant was simply beautiful.

A new series out that I plan on picking up is The Infinite Loop and the variant cover by Stephanie Hans was very artistic looking with great use of color.  Another artistic cover is for Mind Mgmt and apparently it’s in the final story arc.  Amy Mebberson’s variant cover of Luna is just off, i mean it’s a great cover but with my daughter watching the show meaning I watch it as well, just odd looking and yes I realize it has something to do with IDW’s 5 week event of Fiendship.  Another Star Wars release meaning we have another action figure variant.  This time it’s of Chewbacca and who couldn’t love the hairy armed Bigfoot.

Now Lee Bermejo’s Suiciders #3 cover looks badass.  Nice use of colors, almost seems like a mix of color and negative flash photography put in play here.  The detail though was off the charts, very nicely done.  Of course we have another Windblade spinoff story issue and Livio drawing one of the combiners in our continuation of the Transformers Combiner Wars event.  Another new series by IDW is the reboot of Uncle Scrooge.  What I find odd is that Walt Disney, who owns Marvel now, didn’t release this.  Instead IDW Publishing who recently lost the Star Wars license to Marvel after Disney purchased Marvel.  Does it get any more confusing who owns what?  Finally I usually don’t go for zombie covers as I’ve stated previously I’m not on the zombie apocalypse bandwagon that never seems to stop.  But Ashley Wood does phenomenal work and this is no exception.

Any ways, that’s this weeks top 10 and if you are searching for any of the rare ones good luck and happy hunting!

Top 10 Comic Book Covers – Week 4/15/2015

Here are my choices for top comic book covers.  As always there are way to many to pick from but these definitely got my attention!

This was a bleak week for comic book covers for me.  I had a difficult time finding 10 covers that stood out amongst the rest of the flock.  However after much determination and a banana shake I was able to pick them.  First off we have a new series from Dark Horse that mostly caught my eye because of the plot.  Archie vs. Predator and really I am serious.  Eric Powell’s Predator was seriously badass even if there was a hamburger beneath his privates.   I gave Bloodshot Reborn two wins cause I wanted to.  Dirty Harry style from Butch Guice and an interesting interpretation from Jeff Lemire artist of Descender, the one optioned by Sony for a movie.

Next a beautifully drawn and colored virgin variant for Capture Creatures #3 by artist Maggie Rudy; it made me feel good.  Another hot artist right now is Sean Murphy and his Chrononauts variant homage to none other than the guys in Top Gun is actually quite fitting if you are reading the new series by Mark Millar and Sean Murphy; mimicking the arrogant alpha males of the movie minus the intelligence or is it stupidity, not sure yet.  Joe Benitez did an interesting cover for Executive Assistant Iris volume 3 annual but the waste is just so damn small!

Another cute homage cover to the now infamous Days of Future Past titled Nutmeg of all things, nice.  Damien Worm is a very intriguing artist, like Jae Lee he has interesting lines creating fantastic covers and the October Faction is no exception.  I’ve been noticing Sara Richard over the past few weeks now with her ingeniously done My Little Pony covers and it’s good to see her branch out finally to other stories; love the artwork!  Finally Mike Norton did a…well an interesting cover to say the least.  If you have been following the series then well yeah creepy.

Any ways, that’s this weeks top 10 and if you are searching for any of the rare ones good luck and happy hunting!

Top 10 Comic Book Covers – Week 4/8/2015

Top 10 Comic Book Covers – Week 4/8/2015

Here are my choices for top comic book covers.  As always there are way to many to pick from but these definitely got my attention!

Another week and another biased badass Batman related cover by Jae Lee.  I know some of you may think I’m biased and hell I probably am but this weeks cover is pretty cool, am I right?  Please do let me know if I’m not!  Next we have a rather nice play on innocence with a little darkness intermixed with this weeks Winter Soldier’s cover.  With the impending death of Deadpool I thought the spoof variant cover of the recent Death of Wolverine event covers was rather fitting.  Too bad this cover is one of the rare ones with a starting price of around $199.  I guess you can always check on eBay.  Maybe move the decimal point over 2 positions and I’d considering buying though.

I had to look this event up as the Run the Jewels mini event was kind of a question mark for me.  I found a Rolling Stone article talking about the Marvel mini event and the variant covers participating if you are interested.  Howard the duck was always a pimp and now he’s got the gold (and jewels) to back it up.  Next is a new cover by the ever insanely hot artist of the moment Dustin Nguyen.  Ever since Descender’s variant #1 cover came out by this guy he’s been sought after by the likes and literally on fire.  It’ll probably help sales of this new series by Marvel.  Good luck finding this retailer incentive 1:25 cover, sold out everywhere, again check eBay.

I have no idea of what to expect from the new Lola Xoxo series but out of all the hardcore looking covers this one was done well so wanted to include it in this weeks top 10, awesome job Siya Oum!  Another Fiendship book is out this week, I’m sure my daughter is excited.  With this new book is another fabulously looking variant by Sara Richard’s.  Declan Shalvey released a virgin variant of Project Superpowers Blackcross #2 and well it speaks for itself; awe-inspiring indeed.  Dark Horse has released a different kind of book with the new series Rebels.  I was always kind of a history buff so it’ll be cool to see how this one unfolds.  Finally we have another insanely looking Alex Milne Transformers cover and yeah, it’s a Decepticon.  Even though the lines are suppose to be gone a few stragglers still exist and the DOJ is coming, I hope Megatron is actually placed in a position where he finally kicks their ass.

Any ways, that’s this weeks top 10 and if you are searching for any of the rare ones good luck and happy hunting!

Top 10 Comic Book Covers – Week 4/1/2015

Top 10 Comic Book Covers – Week 4/1/2015

Here are my choices for top comic book covers.  As always there are way to many to pick from but these definitely got my attention!

Patrick Zircher is an artist that can draw both consistently and with immense detail dazzling the eyes.  I’m a big fan of his X-O Manowar variants he has and most likely will do in the future for Valiant Entertainment.  Definitely an artist whose work I look forward to.  Next we have a rather disturbing depiction of Garfield done up by Frazer Irving.  All I can say is kudos to thinking a little outside the box with his deviant mannered cat.  Amanda Conner creates a 3 cover view of our crazed Harley Quinn with Dynamite, always fun to see chaos spun around the character.  Yes, Skottie Young made the list, again, but for good reason cause unlike the ever famous Marvel Baby covers this one has a lightsaber in it, and who doesn’t like those two mixed up?!?!

Pulling away from the norm or rather picking a cover who’s main character is barely clothed makes this weeks top 10, I mean she’s barely clothed but a badass none the less.  Another unusual cover was done by Sara Richard and is the variant cover for My Little Pony series published by IDW.  Reminds me of an awesome movie that recently came out called The Book of Life, go rent it.  I even linked up the official trailer of the film for you!

Riley Rossmo was at the ECCC convention I attended recently, awesome guy and this weeks variant cover is by him for the Nailbiter series also an awesome cover.  Leandro Fernandez did an amazing cover for the Names series by Vertigo.  Jae Lee also made the list, again, but come on, his Wonder Woman variant cover freaking rocked!  And finally another cover breaking from the norm was Zombie Fairy Tales Snow White and the Seven Zombies.  I mean go Antarctic Press for that one and I hate zombie books.

Any ways, that’s this weeks top 10 and if you are searching for any of the rare ones good luck and happy hunting!
