Top 10 Comic Book Covers – Week 11/12/2014

Here are my choices for top comic book covers.  As always there are way to many to pick from but these definitely got my attention!

There were a bunch of well designed covers this week.  Hopefully with me being sick and still recovering from last week sickness debacle I’ll have picked the best ones.  First off Jae Lee’s Django Zorro team-up cover was nothing other than stunning.  He has always stood out as a true to form artists and does an amazing job at drawing each character proportionally to size and dimension.  His use of shadows help create that extra something drawing the character out of the page and into your heart.  Another display of good drawing and shadowing was Dan Panosian’s Ghosted cover.  He drew the woman with such elegance and grace, each line adding to the portrayal of the character; nicely done.  Hawkeye vs Deadpool was just good use of the space in telling a silent joke.  I found Harley Quinn on the Suicide Squad cover to be clean and simple.  It added beauty to a somewhat psychotic and ruthless character.

Moving on to the next set October Fashion may not have been a proportionally well drawn cover but it was a great use of shading that added to the creepiness factor.  The center character is what stood out for me.  Clockwork Angels reminded me of my favorite game FFIX with Vivi and Cloud on their Airship flying across the land.  The Final Fantasy series of the late 90s and early 2000s are near and dear to my hear making this a winner.  It doesn’t hurt that it was beautifully rendered or drawn, not sure which but still a cover that stood out this week earning a mention.  Spider-Verse was  a tossup because on one end it felt a bit too busy and on the other end if was cool how Nick Bradshaw layered each character on each other, just enough to get the idea of who’s who.

Now Wytches has been on the radar ever since it was released and the secondary market for flipping these various covers has been hot.  I haven’t picked up the series simply because it’s too hot and I’m a patient man, I can wait for the series to eventually die down and tank in price.  Give it some time, it will like all the rest.  Saga is the only outlier current on the market that has stayed hot that I’m aware of.  Finally Tom Mandrake Artists Edition of X-Files was different and without color.  Black and white can have a completely different interpretation from a color version and this one does a wonderful job at telling a small fraction of a story leading the reader to add that imaginative dimension that black and white seems to have a knack at doing.  One of the reasons why I’ve heard that The Walking Dead is so good, besides the writing.
