Weekly Top 10 Comic Book Covers – Week 6/15/2016

First off to all the father’s out there, Happy Father’s day…why thank you Patrick and with that we are back again for another week of fabulous covers.  To start off is a beautifully crafted Archer & Armstrong portrait of the two mischievous characters created by Kano.  It’s an insightful look at a more calm looking bunch who we’ve grown to know how chaotic the series is with the two of them together.  Next we have a comical looking cover by Kyle Baker for Circuit-Breaker.  Let me ask you ladies, is this not a wonderful approach to dealing with the guy that just can’t take a no for an answer?  Jon Davis-Hunt creates a disturbing cover for Clean Room and what I can’t figure out is whether the eyes are what brings the creepiness factor into play or the layering of the hands on her throat that creeps me out.  What I do know is that Jon’s lines are damn well near perfect and help add to the intricacy of the artwork.  Next is another complex cover with a bit of darkness to it of the Joker in what appears to be a mashup of the Joker, a business man, and your friendly neighborhood mob boss.  Lee Bermejo definitely created a unique edition to the many faces of the Joker.  Next we have Jae Lee with another virgin variant cover for Devolution.  I think he did a very detailed job on the woman’s face, like he always does with the women he draws.

Green Arrow’s variant drawn by Neal Adams creates a rugged looking vigilante that is 100% bad ass, 0% flab.  Next up Sara Richard’s created one of her usual My Little Pony covers but this weeks cover just had a lot of detail happening in the cover that I found went above and beyond the norm of the series.  The blending of the different aspects and characters portrayed in the cover also added to the complexity of the detail creating a very unique blend of colors and shapes.  Another cover that I found to be very cleanly crafted was Norman, a variant by Roman Dirge was simple yet clean.  Next up is a cover from the Samurai series that David Mack is one of the main creators with every release but this week I found that Frederic Genet’s cover had grit, lots of kick ass samurai grit.  I really don’t know what that means but to be honest when I look at the cover Frederic Genet’s old man just looks like somebody I’d rather not mess with.  With our last cover this week we have a relative new comer to the Transformers series Sara Pitre-Durocher.  What she has done with her cover was drawn feeling into her characters.  Yes they are robots and yes some can draw what we would normally see as a more human figure with feelings and a soul but she does a really good job at bringing a little attitude and humanity to these robots.  I love the feeling that was injected into each character making them more relatable to the Transformers fan like me.

Well that wraps up another week of eye catching comic book covers.  If you feel the need to share your thoughts concerning my choices this week please do and I hope to see you back here next week.

Weekly Top 10 Comic Book Covers – Week 1/20/2016

Here are my personal choices for this weeks top 10 comic book covers.  These covers got my attention and whether being good or not deserve a moment of your viewing time, so here we go!

First off this week we have another cover by Aaron Alexovich for Big Trouble In Little China.  Another goofy interpretation of 2 of our main characters from the series most definitely deserves notice.  Next we have Clean Room #4 by Jenny Frison with her realistic approach to the human figure defines her work with utmost clarity.  She has a talent that many artists could and will never discover making her one of the standout artists of today.  Next we have a rather intriguing, yet disturbing cover from Stjepan Sejic.  Yes the woman on the right seems to be in near perfect form but the yang represents the left.  I feel it’s out of proportion, possibly rushed, and quite honestly no where near the woman’s utmost clarity on the right.  Jae Lee is up next with Devolution #1 and I’ve said this before a great many times but he is one of my favorite comic book artists.  His interpretations of the written word for both new and familiar characters astounds me.  His ability to develop a drawing style all his own benefits him in so many ways.  His creations surpass many and just goes to show what he creates is pure genius.  Next we have a bit of abstract art from artist Eduardo Francisco for the Eve Valkyrie #4 cover.

Another artist with a unique style to art is Babs Tarr.  That jolly feel with a mashup between cutsie Saturday morning cartoons and a bit of Japanese manga creates that overwhelming heart felt aura.  Another unique cover released this past week was from Marco Rudy for Silver Surfer Vol 7 #1.   It caught my eye with it’s unique coloring style, done with coloring pencils, and done rather well.  Yes credit is being given to the cover artist only because I’m unsure if he also did the coloring.  With Star Wars comes a cover by Mike Mayhew that had that painted feeling, similiar to Alex Ross.  Something about the way an artist can successfully merge the beauty in a particular frame with a bit of evil or darkness. This had some help from the colorist but the drawing by Lee Carter was done in such a way that the skulls seem to pop out like sunflowers growing in the field.  I find myself in a mesmerizing stare as my eyes gracefully scan top to bottom.  Finally in closing we have a slamming variant cover by Sean and Dave for Tokyo Ghost #5.  Unfortunately for me I pre-ordered the regular cover so I won’t be getting this rather fascinatingly detailed piece of artwork.

So that’s this weeks top 10 most fascinating, eye catching, crazy looking comic book covers that I could find.  If you see any rare variants that you plan on searching for then good luck and happy hunting!

Weekly Top 10 Comic Book Covers – Week 10/7/2015

Here are my personal choices for this weeks top 10 comic book covers.  These covers got my attention and whether being good or bad are deserving of your attention as well, so here we go!

So to start out this week we have a wraparound variant cover for the new series Avengers Volume 6 by Arther Adams.  I like seeing different character variations done by popular artists at a large scale.  Next we have Dave Johnson’s twisted looking tribute to the famous artist Grant Wood and his ever-famous American Gothic had class.  It really makes you intrigued with the main characters. Tula Lotay’s  layered artwork with simplistic coloring made this a fantasic looking cover this week for Codename Baboushka Conclave Of Death #1. As you can see every since he released that special store variant for Midtown Comics, Skottie Young has had pletty of work from Marvel creating has one-of-a-kind “Marvel Baby” covers has they’ve come to be known as.  I’m a sucker for them and a really big sucker when Deadpool and Spidey are featured.  Those two knuckle heads always seem to do well during team-up or beat each other up one-shots as they wise crack there way through the many difficult situations they inevitably find them selves stuck in.

Salvador’s cover for issue 10 of the Dark Vader series was very clean and beautifully done.  Aphra is an amazing character that has added a level of complexity to the Vader series and her looks by conceles her dark inner twisted character much like Vader’s suit.  Now, our next cover by Arjuna Hesitates Grant Morrisons 18 Days variant looks more like something from an art history class book that you’d see while taking a course at a university.  The pale completion and nose screams Renaissance, don’t you think.  The cover alone is a work of art, very impressively detailed.  Lara Croft is back with a new series with Dark Horse, yeah Dark Horse and I think Lara Croft is still hanging out over at Image Comics as well if I’m not mistakened.  That Lara dating to guys at once, slick indeed so it’ll be intersting to see where this series takes us, gritty yet mistical at the same time or will it have a more dark adult tone to it.

Jae Lee has a way of just grabbing your attention and he succeeded in doing so this week from his rather bizare looking Masks 2 variant cover.  I found Ian MacEwan’s Tomorrows #3 cover fasinating in that I too sometimes feel like a block head surfing my ever expanding world from my iPhone with pleasure oozing out of every orifice. Finally we come to the ever famous Menton3 whose dark abstract covers offer the masses a dark entry into a world that can only be of the X-Files.  Most times the covers are of objects or landscapes with characters thown in the mix but this week we get to see something a little different, an alien skeleton.

So that’s this weeks top 10 most fascinating, eye catching, crazy looking comic book covers that I could find.  If you see any rare variants that you plan on searching for then good luck and happy hunting!

Weekly Top 10 Comic Book Covers – Week 7/22/2015

Here are my personal choices for this weeks top 10 comic book covers.  These covers got my attention and whether being good or bad are deserving of your attention as well, so here we go!

Another week has gone by and yes there’s another rather ridiculous looking but somewhat amusing cover that just needed to be apart of my top 10.  This first cover made the list more because of the massive cult following that has centered around the movie Sharknado.  If any of you have seen the first movie then you know where I’m going with this. Seemingly ridiculous but laughable beyond ones own comprehension and it appears that Archie has been blown into the shark tank that…is…Sharknado.  By the way, the 4th Sharknado movie has been green lit for production.  Next off we have a Tom Fowler variant cover for the new Valiant Book of Death event, Fall of Bloodshot.  I met Tom Fowler at this past Emerald City Comicon.  Nice fellow, talked about some recent commissions for the Valiant universe that I owned so I thought that was pretty cool.  Any ways, another cover that looked a bit odd but had that needed humorous aspect was David Mack’s Fight club cover.

I honestly felt like it was slim pickings this week.  There were a lot of choices to rummage through but not a lot that really stood out as unique and eye catching.  So with that my next cover I was a bit torn on.  Infinite Loop #4 by Gerald Parel is a great cover and I loved the way he drew the facial features of the woman but a part of me wanted to skip over because of the way the body torqued.  It didn’t look all that natural to me but well, you can decide if was deserving or now.  Next we have a favorite artist of mine, Emanuela Lupacchino.  Usually I have nothing but praise concerning any cover her hands graces but this weeks John Carter variant cover struck me as odd.  When I saw it all I could think was man she’s got tits for days.  Yes I said it, sorry for being so blunt.  Not sure what happened there but the cover was sold out so I can’t imagine that being a bad thing.  Next in Old Man Logan #3 I love the way Andrea Sorrentino Drew the infamous character.  With his face and body mostly hidden in shadow she creates this ominous feeling for what is to come.

Another favorite artist of mine comes from the Transformer universe and that amazing guy is Andrew Griffith.  Now he knows how to draw Transformers but in this cover I’m stumped in that I don’t recall Soundwave having wheels, ever.  Now Soundwave and Blaster did have a vehicle form in a particular toy line tying to the Transformers Fall of Cybertron line but I can’t remember him having wheels in any other toy line.  Wait he was a plane as well but if we are talking about the current IDW series I’m not all that sure he has wheels.  Please correct me if I’m wrong but other than that, Andrew rules!  That will never change for me.  Jae Lee fascinates us with yet another amazing piece of art work with a virgin variant for Vampirella Army of Darkness.  Next Nick Pitarra, the artist known for Image series The Manhattan Projects, breaks out his rather unique talent for Weirdworld #2.  For our final cover we have a cutsie cover that I found funny and worth mentioning.  Created by Ben Caldwell for the DC cover event Teen Titans Go!, this is an alternate cover for Wonder Woman #42.

So that’s this weeks top 10 most fascinating, eye catching, crazy looking comic book covers that I could find.  If you see any rare variants that you plan on searching for then good luck and happy hunting!

Weekly Top 10 Comic Book Covers – Week 5/20/2015

Here are my personal choices for this weeks top 10 comic book covers.  These covers got my attention and whether being good or not, are deserving of your attention as well.

There definitely wasn’t a shortage of amazing artwork this week and I had an immensely difficult time narrowing down my search to just 10 covers.  I also felt that I shouldn’t let any one publisher runaway with the list.  However after much internal debate with me, myself, and I, I think that I’ve accomplished this weeks task.  First off A-Force is a new series my Marvel and with that came a barrage of varying artist covers.  Most were pretty darn good and that usually doesn’t happen from a big publisher.  Stephanie Hans variant cover was simply amazing prompting me to create a folder for her artwork up on Pinterest: Stephany Hans.  Jim Cheung was up next with his regular cover and I found it fascinating to see so many characters.  I mean yes we have seen many variations of covers with a bunch of characters on it but he melded together in great detail each one clearly in that they are easily identifiable, so yeah, damn good job!

Now Dustin is a pretty hot artist right now but I just found his Archie vs. Predator cover humorous.  Not to mention it’s about Archie and his buddies against one of the most cunning and vicious hunters in the known universe.  Next Deadpool has a new series called Deadpool’s Secret Secret Wars and yeah I’m gonna read it and yeah he is dead but hey, I love Deadpool.  Skottie Young hasn’t made the list in a while but I couldn’t pass this one up, Hulk and Black Widows faces are just too damn funny.  LaRosa’s Ninjax cover is badass and the blobs of blood only add to the oozing affect of badass-ness extruding from the front cover, go buy it!

Michael Del Mundo’s Planet Hulk cover had great imaginative artistry going, love the fist intertwined with smaller fists.  Jae Lee had a bunch of covers out this week, along with Francesco Francavilla but his Re-Animator #1 was by far the best.  Jay Anacleto created a work of art for Red Sonja Vultures Circle #4.  It almost looks like something you would find in an art museum.  Jenny Frison did an amazing job on her rendition of Vampirella, the colorist should get some credit as well.  It really brought that cover to life.  Finally Steve Epting’s Winter World Frozen Fleet new series cover had life to it.  I may need to pick up this second arc.

Any ways, that’s this weeks top 10.  If you plan on searching for any of the rare ones good luck and happy hunting!

Top 10 Comic Book Covers – Week 4/8/2015

Top 10 Comic Book Covers – Week 4/8/2015

Here are my choices for top comic book covers.  As always there are way to many to pick from but these definitely got my attention!

Another week and another biased badass Batman related cover by Jae Lee.  I know some of you may think I’m biased and hell I probably am but this weeks cover is pretty cool, am I right?  Please do let me know if I’m not!  Next we have a rather nice play on innocence with a little darkness intermixed with this weeks Winter Soldier’s cover.  With the impending death of Deadpool I thought the spoof variant cover of the recent Death of Wolverine event covers was rather fitting.  Too bad this cover is one of the rare ones with a starting price of around $199.  I guess you can always check on eBay.  Maybe move the decimal point over 2 positions and I’d considering buying though.

I had to look this event up as the Run the Jewels mini event was kind of a question mark for me.  I found a Rolling Stone article talking about the Marvel mini event and the variant covers participating if you are interested.  Howard the duck was always a pimp and now he’s got the gold (and jewels) to back it up.  Next is a new cover by the ever insanely hot artist of the moment Dustin Nguyen.  Ever since Descender’s variant #1 cover came out by this guy he’s been sought after by the likes and literally on fire.  It’ll probably help sales of this new series by Marvel.  Good luck finding this retailer incentive 1:25 cover, sold out everywhere, again check eBay.

I have no idea of what to expect from the new Lola Xoxo series but out of all the hardcore looking covers this one was done well so wanted to include it in this weeks top 10, awesome job Siya Oum!  Another Fiendship book is out this week, I’m sure my daughter is excited.  With this new book is another fabulously looking variant by Sara Richard’s.  Declan Shalvey released a virgin variant of Project Superpowers Blackcross #2 and well it speaks for itself; awe-inspiring indeed.  Dark Horse has released a different kind of book with the new series Rebels.  I was always kind of a history buff so it’ll be cool to see how this one unfolds.  Finally we have another insanely looking Alex Milne Transformers cover and yeah, it’s a Decepticon.  Even though the lines are suppose to be gone a few stragglers still exist and the DOJ is coming, I hope Megatron is actually placed in a position where he finally kicks their ass.

Any ways, that’s this weeks top 10 and if you are searching for any of the rare ones good luck and happy hunting!

Top 10 Comic Book Covers – Week 4/1/2015

Top 10 Comic Book Covers – Week 4/1/2015

Here are my choices for top comic book covers.  As always there are way to many to pick from but these definitely got my attention!

Patrick Zircher is an artist that can draw both consistently and with immense detail dazzling the eyes.  I’m a big fan of his X-O Manowar variants he has and most likely will do in the future for Valiant Entertainment.  Definitely an artist whose work I look forward to.  Next we have a rather disturbing depiction of Garfield done up by Frazer Irving.  All I can say is kudos to thinking a little outside the box with his deviant mannered cat.  Amanda Conner creates a 3 cover view of our crazed Harley Quinn with Dynamite, always fun to see chaos spun around the character.  Yes, Skottie Young made the list, again, but for good reason cause unlike the ever famous Marvel Baby covers this one has a lightsaber in it, and who doesn’t like those two mixed up?!?!

Pulling away from the norm or rather picking a cover who’s main character is barely clothed makes this weeks top 10, I mean she’s barely clothed but a badass none the less.  Another unusual cover was done by Sara Richard and is the variant cover for My Little Pony series published by IDW.  Reminds me of an awesome movie that recently came out called The Book of Life, go rent it.  I even linked up the official trailer of the film for you!

Riley Rossmo was at the ECCC convention I attended recently, awesome guy and this weeks variant cover is by him for the Nailbiter series also an awesome cover.  Leandro Fernandez did an amazing cover for the Names series by Vertigo.  Jae Lee also made the list, again, but come on, his Wonder Woman variant cover freaking rocked!  And finally another cover breaking from the norm was Zombie Fairy Tales Snow White and the Seven Zombies.  I mean go Antarctic Press for that one and I hate zombie books.

Any ways, that’s this weeks top 10 and if you are searching for any of the rare ones good luck and happy hunting!

Top 10 Comic Book Covers – Week 3/25/2015

Here are my choices for top comic book covers.  As always there are way to many to pick from but these definitely got my attention!

This weekend is ECCC weekend and with that I have so little time between that and normal life.  The show was pretty awesome and it’s popularity has increased dramatically amongst the comic reading community.  With that wonderful lead in I have this weeks top 10 covers that I found pretty eye catching.  Jae Lee did another outstanding Catwoman showing off his natural talent for the woman form.  Valentin Ramon did a fantastically imaginative cover totally different from anything else this week.  I was even able to get some stuff signed by the creative team over the ECCC weekend.  Darth Vader #3 by Adi Granov was dazzling and sold out I may add with the introduction of this new character depicted on the cover.

We also had some funny (Edward Scissorhands), bizarre (Intersect), and awe inspiring (George Perezs Sirens).  Project Superpowers Blackcross by Tula Lotay was also intriguing with use of shading offset by blood red.  Jeff Lemire and Matt Kindt’s interlocking variant for The Valiant #4 also made the list as watercolors are hard to do and this series retailer incentive variants from the two are worth owning if you can find them.  Finally a relative new comer that I have not heard of but will keep an eye out was the retailer incentive variant for Transformers Windblade Combiner Wars #1 by Sara Pitre-Durocher.   Nothing like seeing Windblade giving props to a combiner.  She is one of the newcomer girl Transformers and also a bad ass!  Arcee has her competition even though Arcee is still the original bad ass amongst the Transformers universe.

Any ways, that’s this weeks top 10 and if you are searching for any of the rare ones good luck and happy hunting!

Top 10 Comic Book Covers – Week 3/18/2015

Top 10 Comic Book Covers – Week 3/18/2015

Here are my choices for top comic book covers.  As always there are way to many to pick from but these definitely got my attention!

Right out from the Dynamic Entertainment camp comes a new series Blood Queen vs. Dracula and while the title sounds enticing Jay Anacleto’s virgin variant cover looks almost like a painting and satisfies my curiosity.  I’m astonished by the sheer detail and it must have taken him a while to trace out.  Marco Rudy’s Bucky cover was simple, funny, and cool all at the same time.  To have our Winter Soldier jester the peace symbol while having both fingers shot off speaks for itself, peace won’t come easy.  Elisa Feliz’s also did a wonderful job on what seemingly looks like a painting of one of the main 3 witches from the Charmed show or comic series.  I definitely was not into the show or the comic series but this weeks cover deserved a spot on the list.

Next we have Mike Mignola’s new series Frankenstein Underground, a series I personally have been looking forward to.  The dude still has it creating a beast of a Frankenstein’s monster for this weeks first issue.  Ivan Timewalker from Valiant had its usual multiple cover printing but Brian Level’s variant cover was pretty nifty.  Shards of glass displaying reflections, including the eye, nicely done and captures the reader almost immediately as you try to scan for more detail.  Lee Garbett’s twisted looking Loki cover was one of the first I snagged this week.  Loki’s grotesque display with devouring the poor captured soul kind of hits ya in the gut, creepy yet satisfying.  Another new series out this week is by screenwriter Eric Heisserer published by Dark Horse should be an interesting read but loved the color scheme of this cover.  Eric did the remake of the Thing and Final Destination 5…can you believe they made 5 of those movies?

Supergirl made the list next and who else could have done such an amazing job on Supergirl’s facial expression and body physique but none of than Emanuela Lupacchino!  Finally two Transformer variant covers made the list, first Midtown Comics’s variant cover and then Livio Ramondelli’s variant.  Both looked pretty cool and yeah they were Transformer covers so sue me!

Any ways, that’s this weeks top 10 and if you are searching for any of the rare ones good luck and happy hunting!

Top 10 Comic Book Covers – Week 3/11/2015

Top 10 Comic Book Covers – Week 3/11/2015

Here are my choices for top comic book covers.  As always there are way to many to pick from but these definitely got my attention!

This weeks lot of regular and variant covers and while Dynamic Entertainment has been releasing amazing covers week by week, this week

Yes another Jae Lee cover and I believe is well deserved.  I’ve had no problem sharing my fascination with his work and yes I admit that I may have difficulty treating his work impartially.   However, not all his covers make my list but when they do they do for good reason.  This weeks Action Comics cover made the list with detail.  I just love the way he is able to make Superman look so badass.  Mark Brooks’ Ant Man cover also caught my with sheer detail.  Also, a part of me has pondered when we would actually see the tiny superhero in a situation of life or death from being devoured.  The graphic nature of his dire situation on the cover stirred unsettling feelings of the potential to be ingested by some being.  Definitely an awesome cover by Mr. Brooks!

Yes, again we find ourselves in the confines of Chaos and with each week brings amazingly well drawn, well colored works of virgin variant art!  This week Nei Ruffino’s rendition was drawn and colored nicely and pleasing for my eyes.  Chip Zdarsky made the list with his 3D layered approach of King Flash Gordon #2 variant.  Ninjak’s new series by Valiant Entertainment was released this week with Lewis LaRosa’s drawn cover blasting out of the gates.  Ninjak is a very diverse and complicated character, like so many in the Valiant universe, and I have high hopes for this series.  Just please Valiant, bring back my Archer & Armstrong…please?!?  Matt Brooks’ Red Sonja #14 cover had good use of color and technique.

Skottie Young has a cover for Sinergy and yes it isn’t a Marvel Baby cover.  Well drawn as always in Skottie Young fashion allowing us to revisit why we all love his work excluding the babies!  He’s the type of artist that can take an idea and turn it inside out providing that take on something not easily seen or imagined.  He literally can make anything extraordinary out of the boring or obtuse.; a true out-of-the-box thinker.  Liked the cover for the new series Southern Cross, keeps the mystery at hand.  I’m curious if anyone else has pick up this book and if so, is it worth the read?  Todd McFarlane is back with a vengeance drawing a variant cover for Spawn Resurrection and yes making Spawn look more intimidating than ever.  Finally Sara Pichelli drew a beautiful rendition of Spider-Gwen for this weeks retailer incentive variant.

Any ways, that’s this weeks top 10 and if you are searching for any of the rare ones good luck and happy hunting!
