Weekly Top 10 Comic Book Covers – Week 7/13/2016

Ah, for me Friday is here and with that a rather busy workweek is coming to a close.  This week we saw an influx of amazing covers from all of the publishers that I found it more difficult to select only 10.  So with that we move right on into our first set of 5 covers where Bloodshot Reborn #15 took 2 of the 10 spots this week.  Darick Robertson drew simply what I refer to as a badass.  I don’t think Bloodshot has ever looked so damn burly!  Next Jeff Lemire’s overall interpretation of the series take on Bloodshot Island, something I’m very excited to finally read about, just has that ominous feeling about it.  Especially now that we know looming near the horizon will be a series of bloodshed filled events as we delve into the Islands history.  Next we have a cover from a TV series long since canceled, Charmed with the cover by Elisa Feliz.  This cover really had a lot of finesse and beauty about it.  Dustin Nguyen makes waves with another amazing cover release for his series Descender.  His use of color with art provides clarity to his artistic style reserving the right in my mind at created whatever comes to mind and with such has opened many doors to other series.  Seeing his variants across the board from a variety of subject matter provides a different perspective to how one sees those characters.  Like with Skottie Young and his baby variants it’s fun to have the opportunity to see things from another viewpoint.  Next the gun, from Ben Willsher, taking the approach with aperture created a focal point centered around the barrel of Dredd’s gun.  The impact is intense and unique causing one to look multiple times and what detail is out of focus in order to gain an overall idea of what’s taking place.

I’m not sure how long Dave Johnson has been drawing but I became of fan from his work on the Valiant Entertainment series Shadowman.  I think my favorite cover from him is Shadowman #3 1:25 retailer incentive variant of Mr. Twist.  What can I say about our next cover from Diego Latorre?  Well his variant for Ninjak #17 was manufactured from nothing less than pure awesomeness!  The complex imaginative though process that had to have been invested into the developement of this cover simply blew my mind.  The sheer detail and the way the swords push out of the head like they were jabbed into solid earth, crazy good.  God I hope to see more art from this amazing artist.  Next is really just a selfish plug for a new Netflix TV series that both my kids, and yes even yours truly, are totally invested in.  I heard they were going to remake the series and I thought, huh, that’ll be interesting.  But the story is great, the graphics off the chart, and the overall feeling is good so far as my family and I finished up with season one of the show.  We are all looking forward to season 2.  The Netflix rating is 5 stars so yes we aren’t the only ones that are watching it!  With that our next cover by Raul Allen for the Wrath of the Eternal Warrior visually grabbed my attention from the use of that hot dark pink on black popping out from the internet pages.  I honestly couldn’t pass it buy without at least clicking on it to see the cover up close on my computer.  Yes, even the line detail bordering the center image must have taken Mr. Allen a while to sketch out.  With the choice of color the final cover really came out on top when compared with the many other variants for this issue.  Finally we have another Menton3 cover and yes his unique style when it comes to his art places him in a category all alone.  What I found about his drawing of Scully was her face.  Her face was clear and clean and with a color scheme almost made her look ghost or godly like.

Well that wraps up another week of eye catching comic book covers.  If you feel the need to share your thoughts concerning my choices this week please do and I hope to see you back here next week.

Weekly Top 10 Comic Book Covers – Week 12/16/2015

Here are my personal choices for this weeks top 10 comic book covers.  These covers got my attention and whether being good or not deserve a moment of your viewing time, so here we go!

This weeks list seems to be filled with a bit more kiddie comic fun than normal I suppose with issues like Adventure Time and Jem & the Holograms so if you can sit still without squirming I think we can sift through this list quickly without incident.  So first off we have Adventure Time by Cara McGee and what makes this really shine is the coloring scheme employed on this virgin variant cover.  I love the shading style with bright pastel colors, something that I hope my daughter will utilize later in her coloring book life as it really adds character and makes images pop off the page.  Another fun, not kid friendly book making the list this week is from Big Trouble in Little China, cover by Aaron Alexovich.  Yes it’s another amazingly drawn virgin variant but I love the facial expressiveness of our main character along with the 3 storms.  Next we have Descender and Dustin Nguyen’s unorthodox drawing style.  I feel with Dustin we could either hit or miss and when he misses it’s not that it’s bad but it’s hard to distinguish all the objects and characters on the cover or page.  However on the flip-side when he nails it the damn image is freaking gorgeous.  I believe this week’s cover nailed it and let’s be clear, I do love his drawing style.  We have a double whammy with this weeks Jem and the Holograms Holiday Special.  I felt both covers were beautifully done taking what is and drawing that outside the box of normalcy.  Both Amy Mebberson and Agnes Garbowska took their time to create such cute designs.

Judge Dredd’s is starting a new volume with a wraparound variant that caught my eye simply with the sheer enormous detail of content taking place on the cover. Pinocchio Vampire Slayer Versus The Vampire Zoo by Dusty Higgins just caught my eye because of the underlying idea behind this new series.  I mean, Pinocchio a slayer of anything?  I suppose it may work as he is made of wood and especially in those situations where he’s backed in the corner he could simply lie his way out of a bad situation killing vampires through the heart with his nose sticking it to the bad guys, I mean it could be funny.  I’ve always enjoyed our next artists covers as they always stand out amongst the somewhat crowded barrage of comic book covers.  Babs Tarr’s Silk cover seemed simple enough yet just had that wow factor helping it rise above the rest of the standard “look at me” posing portraits you see every week.  Next we have a new series out for the boys whom helped save the universe with the Avengers and that would be Starbrand and Nightmast.  They were always the odd boys, one reserved, one gun-ho, yin and yang so it should be an interesting series to pick up.  Finally we have yet another cover from the ever famous Sean Murphy and Matt Hollingsworth.  I love how elegantly they have drawn our lady friends near perfect figure.

So that’s this weeks top 10 most fascinating, eye catching, crazy looking comic book covers that I could find.  If you see any rare variants that you plan on searching for then good luck and happy hunting!

Weekly Top 10 Comic Book Covers – Week 7/8/2015

Here are my personal choices for this weeks top 10 comic book covers.  These covers got my attention and whether being good or bad are deserving of your attention as well, so here we go!

With my slight break from the top 10 coinciding with last weeks 4th of July celebration we are back on track with another week of covers.  So lets dive right in with our first cover by Sebastian Fiumara and his take on the characters centered around Hellboy.  I actually thought they were done pretty well and a lightly different take on a couple of them, mainly the women.  Next is a favorite of my from Skottie Young and his take on the Age of Apocalypse.  I picked up the Age of Apocalypse omnibus back when it first came out (before the price skyrocketed) and it soon became a favorite Marvel storyline of mine.  That and Rick Remender’s fantastic Uncanny X-Force run; Deadpool so rocks.  This next one really goes in hand with the show.  If you aren’t up to speed with the T.V. series Teen Titans Go! then well, skip this cover and move on.  Dan Hipp really captured the moment with Batman and Gordon spot on.  Just like the show, both goofballs are usually cracking up like their portrayal on the cover and usually after some crazy funny event the Teen Titans are involved with.

Luna Ouyang created a fantastic image for Classic Popeye #36, very beautifully done and by far different from many of the covers released this week.  Descender releases #5 and with that another image from Dustin Nguyen.  His art has definitely passed the uniqueness category from other covers, which always seems to halt the eyes while flipping through the covers.  Eternal Soulfire #1 cover image of the beautiful warrior fairy done by Michael Turner caught the eye simply because the proportions of the woman I felt were spot on.  Yeah wings but in all seriousness there have been a lot of drawings of women as of late and I feel like a lot of them are off.  It could just be me but this one needs to be given credit where credit is due.

Justice League Of America Vol 4 #2 by Francis Manapul made the list almost with the coloring style done on the cover.  There is a lot going on in this cover and all was brought forth by 2 colors, shading seems to cover the rest, well done.  Now I haven’t been following Mrs. Deadpool And The Howling Commandos and I really should be but this weeks variant by Giuseppe Camuncoli caught my eye with the use of shadowing that brought forth the mummy as the centerpiece of the cover.  I really like this cover and how it was drawn and then colored.  Phil Noto made the list with his drawing for Spider-Verse Vol 2 #3 and finally the water colored image of Strange Fruit #1 variant by JG Jones and it’s wraparound debut.  Very different, eye catching, thought provoking so keep your eyes out for this series.

So that’s this weeks top 10 most fascinating, eye catching, crazy looking comic book covers that I could find.  If you see any rare variants that you plan on searching for then good luck and happy hunting!
