Top 10 Comic Book Covers – Week 10/15/2014

Here are my choices for top comic book covers.  As always there are way to many to pick from but these definitely got my attention!

Out of all the covers this week I think Kyla Vanderklugt’s variant for Jim Hensen’s Storyteller Witches was beautifully done.  I’ve heard it’s a good read so I hopefully another will grace my list.  Devin Roth’s variant for Bobs Burgers was just plain creepy, hence making my list for that reason alone.  I have no clue what the series is about or why variant flipping on eBay is rampant but there must be a reason.  Michael Avon Oeming’s variant for Enourmous hit the list hard with a monster pounding visual.  The series seems to sellout in a matter of seconds.

Chris Burnham did an awesome job on the Deadpool’s Art of War variant and I plan on finding me a copy here soon as long as it’s cheap enough on eBay.  I hate paying full price for variants.  Skottie Young has graced his presence on my top 10 list again and with the Death of Wolverine event wrapping up, me ignoring the event and the outcome, Wolverine’s dead right??  Woops…any ways, what is up with Cutter?  Like a creepy ex-girlfriend stalking you it somehow managed to find my list.  You try telling her that it’s not gonna work out, I dare ya.

Simpsons, come on man, it’s not on my list for artistic reasons.  It’s purely on my list because Homer and Donuts brings back a flood of childhood memories.  Memories of watching the Simpsons every Monday night on Fox, week by week, waiting for that new intro to air.  Funny thing the damn show is still running and I believe it holds the record of longest prime time shows still running.  Another memory shaking cover was the retailer incentive Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles by Ulises Farinas.  Nothing like seeing the boys together, Rock Steady and Bebop, bad-ass to the core!  Oh yeah, my daughter loves Teen Titans Go! and that cover was off the cute scale, so sue me!

Top 10 Comic Book Covers – Week 10/08/2014

Here are my choices for top comic book covers.  As always there are way to many to pick from but these definitely got my attention!

Another week and here we are with another set of covers that need sharing.  Right off the bat we have a variant cover beautifully done by Mike Mignola.  As a big Hellboy fan his artwork brought a new dimension to comic book artwork as a whole.  Panel by panel one can always get a  360 view of the stories surroundings without needing a narrative dialog.  If you get a chance, hop on board the Mignola train.

I’m not a big Spider-man fan but this weeks Deadpool variant cover made the list simply because it’s pure comedic genius.  By far one of the best uses of a Deadpool homage fitting for the two since their team-up relationship has gone back since the 90s and one always laughs when the boys get together to crack a joke.  Then of course Skottie Young’s Avengers & X-Men AXIS made the cover.  I’m not a selfie type of person but Batgirl was kind of cute, don’t you think?  Jake Myler’s Fraggle Rock and Tom Scioli’s Transformers vs. G.I. Joe variants brought back good old childhood memories, nothing like jamming down to Fraggle Rock…

Top 10 Comic Book Covers – Week 10/1/2014

Top 10 Comic Book Covers – Week 10/01/2014

Here are my choices for top comic book covers.  As always there are way to many to pick from but these definitely got my attention!

It’s been a short attention span type of week with way too much going on at home, work, and in the comic book world.  I’m honestly keeping this one short as I need to finish up my review of Deadpool vs. X-Force that I’ll post over on my TherapyInComics.wordpress.com blog.  Any ways, as always I’m a sucker for skottieyoung covers as there were no shortage of them this week.  You know at some point I hope Marvel offers a hardcover book displaying all the covers from the beginning of this crazed baby saga, Avengers vs. X-Men Midtown Exclusive Skottie Young Wraparound variant.  Yes…that would be nice.

As for the rest of the covers batman, Aquaman, and Bloodshot offered striking detail of the characters within the story and totally deserved being on any top 10 list for that matter.  As for the rest of the covers each one offered some type of uniqueness to them that stood out.  However, till next time enjoy!

Top 10 Comic Book Covers – Week 9/24/2014

Top 10 Comic Book Covers – Week 9/24/2014

Here are my choices for top comic book covers.  As always there are way to many to pick from but these definitely got my attention!

Of course Greg Tocchini has made the list again I mean why wouldn’t it?  Each cover is a work of art, seriously take a closer look and really take in what is happening.  As for Pop #2, even though I didn’t like issue #1 and I’m skipping the rest of the series doesn’t mean the cover art is fantastic.  Personally I just enjoy how Jason Copland uses the cover space in different way, thinking outside the box (…or cover).  Fiona Staples is another winner here since I already enjoy her beautiful Saga covers.

New Avengers, Superman Doomed, and Red Sonja covers just look badass, don’t they?  As for Storm I think David Yardin did a wonderful job at showing off Ororo Munroe’s real beauty seemingly at peace as she manipulates the lightning around her.  Another at peace cover done well was Savage Wolverine #23 where a peaceful moment of James Howlett under the cherry blossom tree is captured by cover artists Declan Shavley and Jordie Bellaire.

I love the pure serenity of Tomb Raider #8 cover.  It’s definitely of mine for the week.  Finally we come to Samurai Jack and Genndy Tartakovsy’s variant rendition.  Simply put, reminds me of the time I was watching Samurai Jack during the golden age of cartoons on Cartoon Network.  I sometimes miss those time of mindless work, going to school, and only worrying about the rent, the car, and what’s to eat.

Top 10 List (Alphabetical Order…)

  • Aliens Fire And Stone #1 Cover B Variant Fiona Staples
  • Low #3 Greg Tocchini
  • New Avengers Vol 3 #24 Cover A Regular Gabriele Dell Otto
  • Pop #2 Jason Copland
  • Red Sonja Vol 5 #12 Cover A Regular Jenny Frison
  • Samurai Jack #12 Cover B Variant Genndy Tartakovsky Subscription
  • Savage Wolverine #23 Declan Shavley and Jordie Bellaire
  • Storm Vol 3 #3 Cover A Regular David Yardin
  • Superman Doomed #2 Cover B Incentive Dan Jurgens Variant
  • Tomb Raider Vol 2 #8 Derliz Santacruz & Andy Owens

Top 10 Comic Book Covers – Week 9/17/2014

Top 10 Comic Book Covers – Week 9/17/2014

Here are my choices for top comic book covers.  As always there are way to many to pick from but these definitely got my attention!

Hellboy, B.P.R.D., and [] series have all been a favorite of mine.  Something about this alternative paranormal world where large creatures to cursed frogs seem to find their way through the cracks causing havoc amongst the general population.  Only the members of the B.P.R.D. can stand in their way and even though this is issue 123 I still find each story refreshingly entertaining.  No matter who you are this series should be on everyone’s reading list at some point in their lives.

Menton3 is a fascinating artist that can conjure up some of the most creatively covers.  They can be grim at times although the X-Files cover that made the list seems ominous with the graceful light shinning down.   As for this weeks Edge of Spider-Verse issue, Robbi Rodriguez’s cover was very simplistic and clean with good use of colors making that issue pop.  Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles…heroes in a half shell, turtle power!  I mean…if you know it, sing it.  If only I had jumped on the bandwagon for IDW’s reboot of the green guys…

Swords seem to be the theme for two other covers that made the list.  First off is Deadly Class #7, another amazing series by writer Rick Remender.  The writing rocks, killers in training make up the student body, and the story is set in the 80s.  What more could you want?!?!?  The second cover Clone just stood out.  I’m amazed we’ve reached issue #20 with full steam ahead.  It’s a unique take on sci-fi dealing with the cloning conundrum.

Can’t forget the unforgettable Deadpool, yes the merc with a mouth.  Deadpool mania has hit the Marvel universe hard and it doesn’t look like he’s leaving mainstream comics anytime soon.  If you are interested in checking out more Deadpool stuff then check out the Deadpool Bugle website for all things Deadpool.

Top 10 List (Not in order…)

Top 10 Comic Book Covers – Week 9/3/2014

Top 10 Comic Book Covers – Week 9/3/2014

Here are my choices for top comic book covers.  As always there are way to many to pick from but these definitely got my attention!

With the Marvel event of the year Death of Wolverine now chugging full steam I have to give props to some of the covers as I was impressed.  There is some great talent and thought going into the interpretation of of Wolverine’s supposed upcoming death.  I’m not sure if Wolverine will actually stay dead but imagery is amazing!

It’s no secret that Skottie Young is one of my favorite all-time comic book artists and I was ecstatic that he landed himself the opportunity for his own mainstream series Rocket Raccoon volume 2.  In this series we get to see a very different interpretation of the pesky little furball and #3 makes my list; gotta be the guns.  His Marvel Baby interpretation for the Death of Wolverine #1 book also made my list, yeah, I’m a sucker for the babies!

I’m actually not in following Squidder but I may have too as each cover released literally mimics fine art, David Stoupakis killed it.  As for the new series Hawkeye vs. Deadpool there’s nothing like seeing the goofball square off with one of the most serious Marvel universe characters, besides Captain America, and as with most of the Deadpool miniseries, I’m excited for each one and this is no exception.

Top 10 List (Not in order…)

Marvel Event – Death of Wolverine

Unfortunately Tumblr will only allow up to 10 pictures per pic post.  That being said there are just too many covers of issue #1 for this years over-hyped Marvel event Death of Wolverine to post.  If anyone cares to share then definitely tack on additional covers to the post. There are also retailer incentive sketch variants complimenting the color variants listed below.

So, taking Marvel’s direction at face value, if and when Wolverine is killed off, when do you think the writers at Marvel will resurrect the beast?

Top 10 Comic Book Covers – Week 8/27/2014

Here are my choices for top comic book covers.  As always there are way to many to pick from but these definitely got my attention!

I have always been amazed at the artistic talent of Alex Ross and although he has been releasing many spectacular covers this one of Spider-Man emerging from the flames caught my eye.  Matt Kindt’s Mind MGMT cover is almost 3D’isk in appearance and I’ve been waiting for Low #2 to hit the shelves simply because Greg Tocchini’s art blew my mind with issue #1. Now that the pieces have been reassembled I’m expecting the same mind blowing experience with this issue.

As for the rest, both covers of Transformers vs. GI Joe made the list as they are just damn cool, a bit reminiscent of the past Marvel versions.  The Flash was ridiculous, a selfie just wouldn’t work…superman should be way out of focus, now that would have been cooler…

  • Amazing Spider-Man Vol 3 #1.4 Cover A Reg Alex Ross

Excited that Supreme Blue Rose #2 is finally out and I think Phil Jimenez did an amazing job on the Wonder Woman collage.  Eastman does his usual and boy do I love it!  I also think Manifest Destiny constantly releases eye catching covers, part of the reason why I’m so hooked on the series.  However my first love is Transformers and anything that Alex and Casey release, please keep paying them well IDW.

Finally a new issue of Dream Merchant is out!  I thought that was gonna be a canceled mini series since issue #3 came out what seems like eons ago.  Who doesn’t love Archer & Armstrong’s homage cover.  I love all these covers, especially Casey Coller’s version of one of my most favorite Transformers and that would be Blaster!
