Weekly Top 10 Comic Book Covers – Week 6/8/2016

Well this week I think I’ll first start off with a cover at the end of the list and what is another run of DC Rebirth issues. Now while they all sold out I’m not quite sold on this whole rebirth thing.  However I think Stanley Artgerm Lau did an outstanding job on Wonder Woman’s physic.  She simply looks stunning to me.  Now with that out of the way we head back to the beginning where we see another cover for Big Trouble in Little China now at issue #25 and still going strong. The regular cover by Jeffrey Chamba Cruz has a lot going on with multiple layers adding to the complexity.  The design of the body as a background creates a nice base for the placement of the main and minor characters.  Definitely love that iconic shirt though on Jack Burton.  Andrea Freccero created a full bodied, full attitude Donald Duck for the IDW Publishing series.  Definitely out-of-the-box design from the normal goofy cartoon pictorial representations that are the norm for a few of these related series.  Next up is an exciting cover by Ryan Ottley for Grizzly Shark.  I mean who couldn’t appreciate the clean lines or charm of a shark with clearly designed teeth drawn for battle against our Grizzly Shark surfacing from below?  Our next cover Head Lopper is a bit withdrawn from my normal selections but I loved the clean lines and clear imagery that it brings to the table, no matter how simple it may seem.  Next up is another Dustin Weaver cover but this time it’s for Howard the Duck.  His drawing style and use of the pastels seems to always create intricate pieces of art work in my mind.  In this cover there’s a lot going on created by his layering technique that produced the depth to the overall cover, so good job Dustin!

Next up Mike Choi creates a masterpiece in the form of Ninjak.  The cover may be lacking in a multitude of colors but that isn’t a deficiency, in fact it’s a blessing.  It allows the reader to appreciate the clean lines and shading technique that adds both depth and beauty to the cover.  This was by far my favorite cover of the week.  Another fascinating cover was created by artist Jenny Frison for Revival #40 and boy does she nail it.  Talent doesn’t begin to speak of what Jenny has and her artwork speaks for itself.  With that we move on to a fun and crazy feel good cover by Nick Pitarra for TMNT Bebop & Rocksteady Destroy Everything and damn that is a long ass title!  Some people may not think Nick’s artwork is their cup of tea but for me it is and every since his work on the Manhattan Projects introduced his work to my world I’ve been a diehard fan ever since.  I still haven’t read this series yet but don’t worry Nick, I plan on buying the series and reading for however long this thing goes for!  Last on the list is a cover by Ricardo Lopez Ortiz & Tom Muller…whew…and what I liked about this cover was it’s layout and positioning of both characters.  The artwork is rough around the edges with a color scheme seemingly the thrown amuck but that’s the genius behind what makes this a stand out cover.

Well that wraps up another week of eye catching comic book covers.  If you feel the need to share your thoughts concerning my choices this week please do and I hope to see you back here next week.
