Weekly Top 10 Comic Book Covers – Week 4/27/2016

This week has been hectic with the entire family very sick for the past week.  Kids home on Friday and now this weekend I too have fallen victim to the bug.  As my wife heads off to urgent care I sit here with both sick kids eating breakfast thinking to myself, the last thing I want to do right now is write.  My head and chest hurt and I don’t think I can do much nor do I think anything I say could be remotely witty or intelligent, however I’m gonna give it a shot so bare with me!

Ah with sickdays brings endless movies to watch and one that I did get to watch over this weekend was the infamous Bill and Ted’s Excellent Adventure, a perfect movie to pass the time with and this weeks fist cover just so happens to be a cover for Bill & Ted Go To Hell by artist Conor Nolan.  I love the ploy around taking an 80’s style record bin and integrating it into both the credits and theme.  At first our next cover by Ryan Brown’s for Creepy doesn’t seem like much but seriously take a closer look at the detail woven into that image and then you’ll realize, minus the color this cover has a lot going for it in sheer detail alone, awesome job.  Colleen Coover incentive variant cover for the last entry in the 4-part miniseries Faith just felt warm and portrayed the character as whole-hearty as one could draw.  I’m sorry but I had to add Lords Of The Jungle #2 rare virgin variant cover by Felipe Massafera.  Both characters chests are literally falling out of their clothes.  Just so much chest I couldn’t help myself!  Strawberry Shortcake relaunches at IDW Publishing and with that comes an amazing artistic team to ensure that it has some relative success with the kiddos.  Amy Mebberson takes the cake, the strawberry shortcake for this week, you get it, no well if the same talent that helped My Little Pony take off starts to dump their talent into this series, we could have another successful line, possibly a T.V. series as well.  You just never know these days.

Priscilla Tramontano Transformers More Than Meets The Eye incentive variant made me laugh simply because of the cast partaking in the cover space with the focus on Megatron and his simple phrase, “Don’t worry, we’re the good guys”.  If anyone has been following the series then you all know Whirl is rather nutz and a loose cannon.  Cyclonus was at one point Galvatron’s second in command with that group, then we have Ravage (a cassette tape from Soundwave…also a Decepticon), and finally Megatron, now autobot co-leader of the lost light; need I say more?  When I saw EJ Su Wiki was the variant cover artist for Transformers Sins of the Wreckers I was floored as I  haven’t seen much artwork from him since the Transformers Infiltration, Escalation, and Devastation era of IDW Publishing.  I have so many happy-happy-joy-joy feelings for this amazing artist’s reentry into the Transformers Universe!  Siya Oum fascinates me with her portrait style art.  I enjoy the glow that emanates from most of her drawings.  However I’m beginning to realize that she may not be able to do much else with her art.  Yes, very beautiful at times but very stagnate in originality when it comes to new material. It would be nice to see her take a character and redesign her or him from outside the box she is currently in.  I’m actually surprised that Velvet has made it this long.  Yes is has great writing and art but wasn’t sure it could really connect with readers.  Apparently I’m flat out wrong and Mr. Brubaker and Steve Epting are still crusing along.  I found Miran Kim Art Appreciation variant for X-Files to be rather intriguing to look at.  I enjoyed the usage of various patterns to make up clothing, aura, and background.

Well that wraps up another week of eye catching comic book covers.  If you feel the need to share your thoughts concerning my choices this week please do and I hope to see you back here next week.
